THE BLUE BOX RECYCLING INITIATIVE

The Blue Box Program is a single stream recyclable collection program that will encourage separation of recyclable materials from the general waste at the point of generation.

DISTRIBUTION OF COLOUR CODED BAGS

To encourage the sorting of waste Colour Coded Bags will be distributed to households by recyclers and volunteers assigned to the different Local Governments and Local Community Development Areas.

COLLECTION DAYS

The Bags will be collected on Saturdays by recyclers at door steps.

COMMUNITY RECYCLING CENTERS

The collected bags will be transported to designated Community Recycling Centre in each Local Government or Local Council Development Area where the recyclables will be sorted and sold to off-takers.

BENEFITS OF THE BLUE BOX PROGRAM

  • To capture about fifty (50) percent of recyclables upstream with zero tolerance for scavenging by June 2021
  • Attract Major investors, create green jobs and further strengthen the sector
  • Re-orientation of scavengers and Integration as Resource Managers at the Community Recycling centers where their expertise will be needed reducing the negative impact on their means of livelihood
  • Encourage zero waste generation in the State and promote an healthier and cleaner environment

  • Increase economic security by tapping domestic source of material

Q: What is the Blue Box initiative?

A: The Blue Box initiative is a recycling program to encourage sorting of waste from source.

Q: How do I get the Colour Coded Bags?

A: The Agency will distribute the bags through assigned recyclers and volunteers.

A: The bags can be used to collect and store cans, bottles, plastics and papers.

A: Sorting of my waste will help reduce waste going to the landfill. The recyclables can also be used as raw materials for new products.

Q: How do I dispose of the sorted bag or should I give the bags to my PSP?

A: A recycler will be assigned to your area who will pick up the colour coded bags every Saturday.  The contact of the recycler would be displayed on our webpage, mobile app and fliers.

Q: What happens to the collected and sorted materials?

A: The bags once collected, they are then transported to a Community Recycling Centre where they are sorted and sent for processing.

Recycling is the turning of materials that would otherwise be termed as waste into new materials. It is an alternative to waste disposal and is the third component of the waste hierarchy.
